The UK Casino Guide to Licensing, Safety and Your Rights as a Player

Britain regulates online casinos more tightly than most countries. What the licence covers, what it does not, and how to check it in two minutes.

The Gambling Act 2005 received royal assent on 7 April 2005, and for the first time it brought internet gambling under British law. It also created the Gambling Commission, the body whose licence number now sits in the footer of every legitimate UK casino. Much of what looks like fine print on a casino site follows from that one Act, and from a pile of rule changes made since.

This guide explains what a UK casino actually is, what its licence promises, and where that promise stops. For a ranked comparison of sites, the UK casino sites guide is the page to use. Here the subject is the system behind them.

What counts as a UK casino

A UK casino, in the sense that matters to a player, is an operator holding a remote casino licence from the Gambling Commission. Where the company has its servers, or where the brand began, is secondary. Many of the best-known brands grew out of high-street bookmakers and casino chains: Ladbrokes, Coral, William Hill and Betfred are bookmaking names, and Grosvenor is a name attached to physical casinos as well as an online site. Their websites hold the same sort of licence as any newcomer.

The line the Commission draws is about who serves British customers. The Gambling (Licensing and Advertising) Act 2014 required offshore operators wanting British business to apply for a Commission licence, and it brought in a point-of-consumption tax from November 2014. Since then a site that targets Britain from abroad without a licence is outside the system, whatever its home licence says.

An operator can also be a UK-licensed brand run by a company with a long name you have never heard of. The brand on screen and the licence holder are often different, which is why the footer is worth reading.

Checking a licence in two minutes

Do this once per site before registering, and again if a familiar brand changes its name or ownership. The whole check takes less time than filling in the sign-up form, and it is the single most useful habit a new player can pick up.

  1. Scroll to the footer and find the licence number and company name.
  2. Open the Commission’s public register of businesses and search by either.
  3. Confirm the status is active, and that the activity includes remote casino.
  4. Compare the trading name on the register with the site address you are on.

If anything fails to match, stop. The register is the only check that counts. Seals and badges can be copied; a record on a government regulator’s register cannot.

What the licence obliges operators to do

The detail changes with each round of rule making, so treat this list as a snapshot and confirm anything important on the Commission’s website.

Age and identity: operators must verify a customer’s age and identity before the person can gamble. Self-exclusion: every online licensee has had to take part in GamStop since the end of March 2020. Payments: credit cards have been banned for gambling since 14 April 2020, and cryptocurrency is not permitted either. Game design: since 31 October 2021 there has been a minimum of 2.5 seconds between slot spins and no autoplay or turbo play. Stakes: from 9 April 2025, £5 a spin on online slots, falling to £2 for 18 to 24 year olds from 21 May 2025. Limits: from 31 October 2025 customers are prompted to set a financial limit before a first deposit.

Notice what is missing from that list. No rule says an operator must be generous, quick to pay or pleasant. The licence sets a floor for protection, not a quality standard.

Nobody should read the table as a finished story, because the Commission keeps consulting and the dates will keep moving. The pattern is plain enough: each round of rules closes a gap that harm data or complaints exposed, and each lands first on the product that caused the complaints. Credit cards went first, then fast slots, then high slot stakes.

Complaints: the route has three steps

Take it to the casino first, in writing, and keep the reply. Licensed operators must have a complaints procedure and must tell you which approved alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider handles disputes. If the operator has not resolved the matter after eight weeks, or if you reject its final answer, you can go to that ADR body, free of charge to you. IBAS and eCOGRA are two of the providers that appear most often. Last, tell the Commission about licence breaches. It does not settle individual disputes, but evidence of patterns can feed into its enforcement.

Chargebacks, social media pressure and review sites are tempting alternatives. None of them replaces the ADR route, and the written complaint is the thing that proves what happened.

Offers, terms and the word “free”

Welcome offers vary every few weeks, so a guide that quotes them is out of date by the time it is read. Instead of figures, look at four items in the current terms: what the wagering requirement is, how long the offer lasts, which games count toward it, and what the maximum cashout from bonus funds is. The Commission’s rules on fair terms mean an operator cannot hide the significant ones, but you still have to read them.

On this site, the pages on free spins and no deposit offers explain the mechanics in general terms. “Free” in gambling means free to claim, not free of conditions. A bonus is a loan with strings, and the strings often matter more than the headline. Claiming one is a choice, never a requirement for opening an account.

Verification and why withdrawals pause

Almost everyone who wins a payout meets the same obstacle: the request to prove who they are. Operators must know the customer, so a withdrawal may be held until identity and address documents have been checked, and the operator may ask where the money in the account came from if sums are large. It feels like an obstacle. It is a legal duty, and a reputable site explains the requirement in its terms. Upload clear documents early, before you need the money, and the wait shrinks. A site that never asks for anything and pays instantly deserves more suspicion, not less.

Withdrawing to the method you deposited with is normal practice, and bonus funds can sit under separate rules from cash. Read the withdrawal section before the first deposit, not after the first win.

Four things people get wrong

The first is that a UK address on the website means a UK licence. It does not; read the register. The second is that a famous brand name guarantees the casino section is the same as the sportsbook. Brands can run each product through different companies and licences, so check the one you are actually joining. The third is that GamStop covers every gambling site on the internet. It covers licensed operators taking part, and nothing else, which is a reason to avoid sites that advertise themselves as outside it. The fourth is that regulation removes the odds. It does not. A licensed roulette wheel is still a 2.7% game on a single-zero table, and a licensed slot still returns less than it takes in. The licence keeps the game honest, not generous.

Finding the right level of play

Some people want a short evening game on a phone, others a table with a live dealer, others a trip to a physical venue. The UK system supports all three, but the suitable choice depends on what you are willing to lose, not what the screen suggests. Try the casino games guide to see how each game type spends a budget, and the live casino page for dealer tables. If your reason for playing is anything other than entertainment, such as clearing a debt or earning a living, stop and speak to GambleAware. Gambling cannot be relied on to produce income, and treating it that way is what the harm figures are built on.

Look at your own pattern too. Playing longer than planned, hiding it from people close to you, or topping up the deposit to chase a loss are the early signs that the tools above are needed. Use them while it is still a choice.

Staying in control

You must be 18 to gamble online in Britain. Set a deposit limit before a first deposit, and treat it as a ceiling, not a target. Use the reality check, and take a time-out when sessions run longer than planned. Do not chase a loss: a lost stake is gone, and no later spin is obliged to return it.

GamStop lets you exclude yourself from every participating site at once for six months, one year or five years, for free. GambleAware gives free, confidential help and information if gambling is affecting you or someone close to you. Both belong in your phone bookmarks before you open an account.

You can read about British-themed casinos and what licensing means for them on the British casinos page, or see how the games themselves behave in the casino games guide. The open question for 2026 is how many players actually use the limit prompts, and the Commission has not said how it will measure that.

Frequently asked questions

Is online casino gambling legal in the UK?

Yes, for adults aged 18 and over, provided the operator holds a Gambling Commission licence. The Gambling Act 2005 created the regulator and brought online gambling into the licensing system, and a 2014 amendment extended it to offshore operators serving British customers. Playing on an unlicensed site is not a crime for the player, but it leaves you without protection.

How can I check if a UK casino is licensed?

Find the licence number in the site footer, then search for the company on the public register at gamblingcommission.gov.uk. The register shows the licence holder, its status and the activities permitted. A name that is missing, suspended or revoked is a reason to stop. A badge or logo alone proves nothing.

What is the difference between a UK casino and a casino that accepts UK players?

A UK casino holds its own Gambling Commission licence and follows its rules on limits, verification and self-exclusion. A site that merely accepts UK visitors from abroad, under another regulator's licence, does not owe you those protections. The first group is what this guide means by UK casinos.

Does every UK casino take part in GamStop?

Every Gambling Commission licensed online operator has had to join GamStop since the deadline of 31 March 2020. Registering is free and blocks access to participating sites for six months, one year or five years. A site that lets a registered person in is either unlicensed or in breach of its licence.

Can I deposit with a credit card or cryptocurrency at a UK casino?

No. Credit cards have been banned for gambling in Britain since 14 April 2020, and cryptocurrency is not permitted for UK online gambling. A site that accepts either is outside the UK system, and that alone is a reason to stay away. Debit cards and other regulated methods remain.

What should I do if a casino will not pay a withdrawal?

Complain to the operator in writing first and keep copies. If it is not settled within eight weeks, or you receive a final answer you disagree with, take it to the alternative dispute resolution service named in the operator's terms. The Gambling Commission does not settle individual disputes but wants to hear about breaches.

Are casino winnings taxed in the UK?

Winnings are not taxed for players in the UK at present. Operators pay duty and tax instead, and that is a matter for them. Check HMRC if your circumstances are unusual, such as gambling as a trade. Nothing about the tax position makes gambling a sensible way to earn money.

What age do you have to be to gamble online in the UK?

18. Operators must verify a customer's age before the person can gamble, which usually means a name, date of birth and address checked against records, with documents requested if those fail. Under-18s who use someone else's account break the operator's terms, and the account can be closed.

How do deposit limits work at UK casinos?

A deposit limit caps the amount you can pay in over a day, week or month. Since 31 October 2025 licensed operators must prompt new customers to set a financial limit before a first deposit, and from 30 June 2026 each must offer a clear deposit-based limit. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately.
