The Wolf issue index: numbers 1 to 19, 2002 to 2008

This index gives a short description of each of the first nineteen issues of The Wolf, a poetry magazine edited by James Byrne and published about three times a year. The entries run from September 2002 to the summer of 2008, and each issue has a web edition, a cover image and, for most, a print table of contents. Issues 6, 10 and 11 were also held in full by an outside poetry magazine collection.

The interview is the constant feature. Subjects include Michael Donaghy in the first issue, Matthew Sweeney, Mimi Khalvati, Roddy Lumsden, the publisher Neil Astley, Sarah Maguire, Robin Robertson with John Stammers, George Szirtes, Penelope Shuttle, David Harsent, Fiona Sampson, August Kleinzahler, Carolyn Forche, Saadi Youssef and John Kinsella. Issue 17 instead carries a set of conversations with six poetry editors, and issue 8 pairs a tribute to Donaghy with a piece on Lumsden.

Alongside the interviews run essays and rediscoveries. Peter Redgrove is a recurring presence, with unpublished poems, a profile by James Byrne and a feature on his move from scientist to poet. Other items include Niall McDevitt on Blake as an urban shaman, Matt Williams on Barry MacSweeney, Todd Swift on a new generation, Stephen Watts on Trakl, and reintroductions of Hope Mirrlees's Paris and of Paul Morand's Nice in Ezra Pound's translation. Translation is a steady concern, with essays on the craft, pieces on Danilo Kis and Branko Miljkovic, versions of Dante, Goethe and Vayenas, and work from South America. Several issues name an artist or photographer in residence, among them Emily Chappell, Christopher Twigg and Irras Han.

Poems are counted in each entry, from around thirty in the middle issues to forty or more in several others, with named contributions from Roger McGough, Jeremy Reed, John Hartley Williams and Will Stone.
