After Reading Wallace Stevens

Anna Smaill

I dream and enter a green place,
A place I imagine to be called Claude, Montana.

There are no other people
(the green of a past of several hundred years),

but my mother is there
and we are pleased to see each other.

We make a start on naming things.
The animals we sort in pairs.

We begin with salamander.
